Another application was successfully implemented in the process of investigating circular economy opportunities of the Turkish Circular Economy Platform and supporting companies to generate environmental and economic benefits through the circular economy.
Bilecik Demir Çelik, a member of the platform, made a study on the production potential of secondary raw materials from waste refractories used in the steel production facility, by making use of the 'The Circular Vouchers' technical support program. In the study carried out under the leadership of Company General Manager Muammer Bilgiç, Steelworks Manager Uğur Cengiz, EBRD consultant Dr Beyhan Özdemir, important outputs were also obtained in terms of re-evaluating the waste as refractory in its own facilities besides identification of the potential buyers of waste in various sectors (Refractory Industry, Abrasive Industry, Welding Electrode, Refractory Paint Industry, etc.).
With the project, in which the amount of waste generated by process control was reduced by half, success was achieved in the methods developed for the reuse of the waste generated within the company. Thus, in the last 1 year, the company not only saved 550,000 €, but also prevented consumption of approximately 1200 tons of bauxite, 1.2 million kWh electrical energy, and 65 thousand m3 of natural gas, while preventing the release of 1400 tons of red mud and 1200 tons of CO2 emissions.
In addition to the opportunities created by the reuse of waste, with this work, the company has provided a significant environmental and economic benefit by reducing the consumption amount of "White Fused Alumina (WFA)", which is 100% dependent on imports. Bilecik Demir Çelik plans to develop its works and to start material exchange by using the TMM platform in order to evaluate the wastes from the factory processes of various sectors within its own body.
